Membership Types

AAMA offers membership types for every stage of a medical assistant's career.

Active

An active member shall be one of the following:

(1) A credentialed medical assistant holding current status through a National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA)–accredited certification program and whose credential has not been revoked as provided by the respective credentialing body.

(2) Anyone who was an active member on 12/31/87 and who has maintained continuous active membership. Continuous active membership shall be defined as having dues postmarked or submitted electronically to the AAMA Executive Office by December 31 (the controlling time is that of sending, not that of receiving). Join on or after September 1, 2025, and receive membership through December 31, 2026.

 

Student 1-year or 2-year

Student - 1 Year              

A student member:

a) After a one-year Student membership term, the member is eligible for a second year of Student membership as long as the member renews during the member’s one-year Student membership term. After the second-year of Student membership, the member is then eligible only for either Associate membership or Active membership (if the member meets the Active membership requirements).

b) No member is eligible for more than a total of two consecutive years of Student membership. Join on or after July 1, 2025,* and receive membership through December 31, 2026.

Student - 2 Years           

A student member:

a) After a two-year Student membership term, the member is then eligible only for either Associate membership or Active membership (if the member meets the Active membership requirements).

b) No member is eligible for more than a total of two consecutive years of Student membership. Join on or after July 1, 2025,* and receive membership through December 31, 2027.

*Student Special: The AAMA Board of Trustees approved an extension to the student membership year. Student membership year now begins in July instead of September!

Affiliate

A member who is not eligible for another category of membership, but is interested in the profession of medical assisting. Join on or after September 1, 2025, and receive membership through December 31, 2026.

Associate

A medical assistant who is not yet a CMA (AAMA) and/or who does not fall under any other category. Join on or after September 1, 2025, and receive membership through December 31, 2026.

Membership Policies

  • Medical assisting students must select a one- or two-year student membership and join prior to graduation to qualify for student dues.
  • AAMA membership dues are not deductible as charitable contributions for federal income tax purposes. Dues may be deductible as ordinary and necessary business expenses.
  • There are no cancellations or refunds of membership dues.

2027 AAMA Membership Dues by State

These are the dues for the 2027 AAMA membership term: July 1, 2026, through December 31, 2027. Dues vary by state. The dues listed cover the national, state, and local chapter levels. With the permission of their state societies, some chapters may charge more dues. Please contact us if you have questions.

Renewing Members Exclusive Benefit: Renew your membership between July 1, 2026, and December 31, 2026, to receive free access to the 2 CEU course, Prior Authorizations and Documentation: What Medical Assistants Need to Know in the AAMA e-Learning center. You will receive an email the following business day after membership renewal confirming that you have been granted access to the course.
